Buffalo Sabres Central: Can the Mammoth Mall Buffalo Stand Tall as Utah Hunts Their Maiden Playoff Berth?

The NHL offseason is progressing well, with new hockey stories emerging daily. On Thn.com’s Buffalo Sabres site, there’s an ongoing series examining the Sabres’ 2025-26 regular season schedule. After covering rivalries within the Sabres’ Atlantic and Metropolitan divisions, the focus has shifted to their Central Division opponents, and today the spotlight is on the Utah Mammoth.

The Mammoth have added some new players this offseason, including Left Wingers JJ Peterka and Brandon Tanev, Defenseman Nate Schmidt, and Goalie Slim Vanecek. In the 2024-25 season, the Mammoth defeated the Sabres twice, with Buffalo yet to secure a win. For the 2025-26 season, the teams will face each other twice: on November 4th in Buffalo and November 12th in Utah.

The Sabres-Mammoth rivalry could heat up due to various connections between the teams. Notably, Utah’s logo resembles one of Buffalo’s old logos, and the key trade of the summer involved Utah acquiring Peterka from Buffalo, a move that could elevate Utah’s competitiveness. Beyond this trade, Utah strengthened their roster by signing former Winnipeg Jets winger Tanev and Stanley Cup-winning defenseman Schmidt from the Florida Panthers, bolstering their defense.

Utah also signed veteran goalie Vanecek, who will start as their third-choice goalie. If the Mammoth needed anything else, it would be disappointing, but overall, these moves have improved Utah’s team.

The Sabres are under significant pressure to end their 14-year Stanley Cup playoff drought next season, making every game crucial in the competitive Atlantic division. The Mammoth appear stronger than last year, so if the Sabres aren’t sharp during their November matchups, it could spell trouble. Utah’s early win against Buffalo could place pressure on the Sabres, with just eight days separating the two games.

Both teams will likely be vying for wildcard spots during their meetings, which is somewhat disappointing since fans hoped for at least one late-season game between them. Last season, Utah convincingly won both games against Buffalo with identical 5-2 scores. The second game took place on March 20, a pivotal time for playoff hopes. While Utah missed the playoffs by eight spots, Buffalo was already out of contention, marking a particularly tough moment for the franchise.

This series is crucial for Buffalo. Splitting the games would be acceptable, but a win or two could signify a turnaround. The Sabres have the talent to challenge Utah’s progress and could potentially derail the Mammoth’s momentum with focused play.

Fan Take: This matchup signals a compelling rivalry with significant implications for both teams’ playoff aspirations. Hockey fans should watch closely, as strong performances in these early games could shape the competitive landscape of the Atlantic and Central divisions, injecting fresh excitement into the NHL season.
