On Sunday, the Washington Nationals spoiled a significant moment for San Francisco’s Justin Verlander by defeating the Giants 8-0. Washington’s offense was led by Josh Bell and Paul DeJohn, each with three hits, while James Wood contributed with two two-run doubles, helping the Nationals clinch the series at Oracle Park with their fourth consecutive win.

Verlander, a three-time Cy Young Award winner, had a tough outing in his first season with the Giants, despite reaching the milestone of 3,500 strikeouts, becoming the 10th pitcher in MLB history to do so. The 42-year-old Verlander allowed 11 hits and five runs, managing six strikeouts and walks in the game. Reflecting on his achievement, Verlander expressed gratitude for the milestone and the support from fans.

Mackenzie Gore secured his first win since July 9th by pitching six scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts. CJ Abrams sparked Washington’s offense with two home runs within two innings, following two runs driven in by Wood. Spencer Bivens also had a key two-run double in the seventh inning. Verlander’s allowed hits were all under an exit velocity of 103.9 mph.

Verlander acknowledged his frustrations with the season but compared his current performance to his 2022 campaign when he won the Cy Young Award, suggesting he feels his efforts remain solid despite the challenges.

Fan Take: This game highlights the resilience and depth of the Nationals, showing that even established stars like Verlander can face tough nights. For baseball fans, it underscores the unpredictable nature of the sport and the ongoing emergence of new talent that keeps the game thrilling.
