In an article from November 16, 2009 (Volume 63, No. 09), there’s an interesting insider detail about Niklas Lidstrom, the legendary Red Wings defenseman. While Lidstrom is celebrated for his 18 impressive seasons, contributions to four Stanley Cup victories, and status as one of the NHL’s greatest players, few know he’s somewhat of a rebel. Two of his sons, Adam and Samuel, play minor hockey for the Compuware AAA organization in Detroit — a team owned by Peter Karmanos, who owns the rival Carolina Hurricanes and competes directly against the Red Wings’ Little Caesars AAA organization. This rivalry between the organizations is well-known, and it’s unclear if the Red Wings’ major boss, Mike Ilitch, is aware of Lidstrom’s connection.

Despite turning 40, Lidstrom continues to perform at an elite level, showing little sign of slowing down. He’s recognized for having the best point shot and the best first pass, with very few players maintaining such form at an advanced age. Red Wings GM Ken Holland believes Lidstrom has at least five more seasons left in him and expects him to continue playing effectively for Detroit. Lidstrom’s smooth playmaking—often highlighted in videos of his skillful assists—shows he remains an MVP-level player in the NHL. Lidstrom himself humorously mentioned trying to get a Henrik Zetterberg stick online just to replicate his famous plays.

Fan Take: This revelation about Lidstrom’s unique ties and ongoing excellence adds a fascinating layer to his story, showing he’s not just a phenomenal player but also someone who quietly challenges norms. For hockey fans, it means appreciating the depth of passion and rivalry that fuels the sport, and Lidstrom’s sustained dominance promises more thrilling moments for Red Wings supporters and the NHL alike.
