Jet Backup QB Tyrod Taylor Successfully Undergoes Knee Surgery

At FLOHAM PARK, N.J., New York Jets backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor is expected to recover soon after missing the rest of the preseason due to an illness and undergoing arthroscopic surgery. Although manager Aaron Glenn described Taylor’s condition as “minor,” it remains uncertain if he will be ready for the season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers on September 7.

“I’m pretty sure he won’t play in the preseason,” Glenn shared Tuesday following a joint practice with the New York Giants. “But we’re hopeful he’ll be good to go by week one.”

At 36 years old, Taylor has established himself as the Jets’ second quarterback behind Justin Fields, despite a history of various injuries including rib, wrist, hamstring problems, and concussions. Notably, in 2020, he battled a severe lung pneumonia that was treated through intense medical care by the Los Angeles Chargers team doctor.

Other quarterbacks on the Jets roster include former UFL standout Adrian Martinez and undrafted rookie Brady Cook, who left practice Tuesday due to an ankle issue that isn’t considered serious, according to Glenn. If Taylor is unable to play in the opener, the Jets will face the game without an experienced backup. Martinez, who was mostly on the practice squad last season, has yet to see regular-season action.

Fields praised Taylor’s experience, saying, “This is his 15th year, and of course he’s seen a lot and played a lot of games. It’s certainly great to have him in the room.”

Additionally, wide receiver Allen Lazard will miss two weeks due to a right shoulder injury sustained in the preseason opener against the Green Bay Packers. On a positive note, rookie tight end Mason Taylor (recovering from a high ankle sprain) and left guard John Simpson (back injury) have returned to practice, alongside defensive linemen Knen Williams (calf) and Jermaine Johnson (Achilles), though with limited participation.

Fan Take: This update is crucial for NFL fans as it highlights the challenges teams face in maintaining quarterback depth, especially heading into the season opener. It underscores the importance of veteran presence and resilience in a physically demanding sport like football, where injuries can quickly impact team dynamics and performance.
