  • Newcastle agrees to a £40 million deal for Ramsey
  • Ramsey elevates those around him

The transfer window for the summer of 2025 was something many Newcastle United fans would want to forget.

They have numerous transfer targets to join Premier League rivals, including Hugo Ekichike and Benjamin Sesco, who went to Liverpool and Manchester United respectively. Additionally, the club spent the entire window hanging shadows of Alexander Isaac’s departure from them.

But they also achieved underrated victories with the likes of Anthony Elanga and Malick Chiau. Eddie Howe’s side is also closely associated with Brentford’s Joan Wissa as a potential replacement for Isaac.

Even with these signatures, PIF is hunting for even more team depth and is approaching completing the signatures of talented Premier League players.

Newcastle agrees to a £40 million deal for Ramsey

Fabrizio Romano reported that Newcastle has signed a contract with Aston Villa’s Jacob Ramsey, who is hoping to move to St. James’ park. The 24-year-old has been with Villa since 2007 and rose through the academy to become a regular feature of the first team.

Mike McGrath adds that Newcastle has agreed to a £40 million fee with the Villa, so Magpies will need to hold discussions over personal terms and arrange medical care once an agreement is reached.

However, this is a rapidly developing transaction, with personal terms likely to be agreed more quickly than later, and there is speculation that subsequent transactions were concluded quickly.

West Ham was also reported to have approached the villa for Ramsey, according to Romano, but was discouraged when the player revealed he “wanted only Newcastle.”

“Newcastle has agreed to a £40 million package with Jacob Ramsey’s Aston Villa. 24YO still has to speak to NUFC and agree to personal terms before seeking medical care.”

Newcastle will win a versatile player considered similar to Barcelona’s winger Rafina, according to FBREF.

From a villa’s perspective, they were one of the clubs at the highest risk of a PSR breach, so it may not be necessary to sell more than he would like. Because Ramsey is an academy product, he is listed as profit purely in the villa account and becomes a more valuable player to sell on PSR than the players they signed.

Ramsey elevates those around him

Ramsey’s last season at the Villa was an upgrade to his quiet 2023/24 campaign, with most of his highlights appearing in the Champions League and FA Cup. With Newcastle back in the Champions League, they hope that Ramsey can emulate this cup form in black and white.

Ramsey’s goal involvement isn’t at the level of some of Newcastle’s current midfielder and wingers, but he often contributes to build-up plays that allow his teammates to score and support more frequently.

The 24-year-old average averages 13.5 progressive behavior per 90 minutes in the league and appears in the top 15% of players for accuracy in passing. That is, he not only holds the ball, but often makes it positive.

Additionally, he appeared in the top 5% of players due to his success rate of dribbling. If PIF can get Ramsey, he can get the ball to the forward line regularly, scoring more goals. While no one may be able to replace Isaac’s numbers, signatures like Ramsey can help increase the number of teams and reduce the burden on your goals.
