Defending champion Arena Sabalenka crashed from the Cincinnati Open after a 6-1, 6-4 loss to Elena Rivakina in the quarter-finals.
Rivakina appears to be violating the dominant opening set, and she dropped a lonely game and rounded out an impressive victory in just 1 hour and 14 minutes, offering 11 aces.
The victory returns to Rivakina form, following the semi-finals at Toronto’s National Bank Open.
The 2022 Wimbledon winner will meet Iga Swiatek in the semi-finals after beating Anna Kalinskaya 6-3, 6-4.
Carlos Alcaraz saw the lively Andrei Rublev to book his spot in the semi-finals of the competition with a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 victory.
Alkaraz scored the first set, but Rublev accidentally fought back in the second set, making it seem that Alkaraz sealed the victory when he broke Rublev to go 5-3, but his opponent went straight back and brought the contest back to serve.
Rublev had to hold service to take the game to a tiebreak, but Alcaraz’s fatal double fault won.
The 22-year-old hits 11 aces on his way to victory, facing either Ben Shelton or Alexander Zverev.
Elsewhere, Veronika Kudermetova set up the final four clashes with either Coco Gauff or Jasmine Paolini in a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Varvara Gracheva.
