Kyrie Irving’s “Awful” Injury Setbacks Might Pave the Way for His Dallas Mavericks Stardom, Say NBA Experts

Kyrie Irving suffered an ACL injury last season, which significantly impacted the Dallas Mavericks’ chances of making the playoffs despite his crucial role on the team following Luka Dončić’s trade. At 33 years old, Irving’s scoring and playmaking abilities would have strengthened the Mavericks alongside key players like Anthony Davis, Klay Thompson, and Daniel Gafford, potentially making them strong contenders in the 2025-26 season. However, with no confirmed timeline for Irving’s return, the Mavericks are relying on D’Angelo Russell to manage the backcourt.

While Irving is expected to miss much of the upcoming season, new talent Cooper Flagg offers hope for the team. Highly praised by NBA stars, including four-time champion LeBron James, Flagg is seen as a promising young player. Dave Jacoby believes that Irving’s injury might inadvertently help the 18-year-old rookie adjust to the NBA. Jason Kidd, at Flagg’s introductory press conference, mentioned plans to give him the role of lead ball handler. Though Flagg played limited minutes as a guard during the Summer League, the Mavericks might increase his court time to compensate for Irving’s absence.

Jacoby expressed that while Irving’s injury is unfortunate, it presents an opportunity for Flagg to find his place in the NBA’s fast-paced game. Flagg will benefit from the mentorship of future Hall of Famers like Davis and Thompson, who will help him develop the skills and professionalism needed to succeed. James noted that Flagg is in a strong position within the Mavericks, surrounded by experienced veterans. The team’s championship ambitions align well with Flagg’s ability to contribute on both offense and defense. His impressive midrange shooting, vertical leap, and wingspan make him a challenging matchup for opponents. If the Mavericks maintain their health and consistently win games, Flagg could emerge as a top rookie candidate. Ultimately, his goal is to be a vital player in the Mavericks’ pursuit of an NBA title.
