Yankees to Assign 1B Goldschmidt to Illinois Squad Amid Knee Sprain Concerns

Paul Goldschmidt is dealing with a mild sprain in his right knee, and the New York Yankees may place their experienced first baseman on the injured list before their upcoming trip back to St. Louis this weekend. The team plans to monitor Goldschmidt over the holiday period and decide on his IL status ahead of Friday’s game against the Cardinals.

Manager Aaron Boone mentioned that Goldschmidt has been experiencing considerable pain since last night and this morning. The injury occurred during Tuesday’s game when Goldschmidt overran a foul pop by Byron Buxton in the third inning, sliding and falling near the Yankee dugout. Despite feeling discomfort, Goldschmidt continued playing and helped the Yankees secure a 9-1 win.

Goldschmidt, who has hit .404 against left-handed pitchers this season, did not start on Wednesday and was replaced during a later inning. Since signing a one-year, $12.5 million deal after six seasons with the Cardinals, Goldschmidt has posted a .276 batting average, with 10 home runs and 40 RBIs in 112 games. He has also maintained a strong defensive record, with a .996 fielding percentage and just three errors in 745 chances.

On Wednesday, Ben Rice made his 26th start at first base, and Cody Bellinger made his first two starts of the season at that position. Bellinger praised Goldschmidt’s defensive skills, calling him a key player and appreciating his contributions on the field.

The Yankees are currently fighting to keep their spot in the American League’s third wildcard position, trailing the Guardians by just one game. However, their recent performance has been shaky, with a 4-8 record in August and an overall 29-35 record since early June.

Fan Take: Goldschmidt’s injury could significantly impact the Yankees’ postseason push, as his offensive and defensive presence is crucial. Baseball fans should watch closely how the team manages this setback, as it could shape the intensity and drama of the playoff race.
