NEW YORK – Kay Nishikoli withdrew from the US Open on Wednesday and said his back injury has not completely healed.
Nishikori was injured in May and was pulled out of the French Open. The 2014 US Open Runner Up came back earlier this month due to a first-round defeat in Cincinnati, but said his back wasn’t healthy enough to play in New York.
“Hello, unfortunately, I’m not ready for the US opening yet. I’ve had an MRI on my back and haven’t been 100% healed yet,” Nishiko wrote in a social media post. “I’m working so hard to get back to court soon. Thank you for your support.”
Nishikori was ranked fourth in 2015, the highest by Asian male players, but has suffered injuries in recent years, making it 88th.
He is replaced by a draw by a player who loses in the final stages of qualifying.
