NEW YORK – Jerryn Vandrom and Ivan Ivanov added a new trophy to their collection on Saturday, capturing the US Open Junior Boys and Girls titles in a straight set.
Vandrom defeated Swedish qualifiers Lee Nilsson 7-6 (2), 6-2 in a girl’s draw, overcoming an early deficit and speeding out to take the first set and grab the second.
“I don’t think I can believe it yet,” Vandrom told the court after his victory. “I’m very pleased with the level I’ve shown here during my week.”
The Belgian player was in Hot Streak in New York this year. Second place Hannah Krugman and third Christina Penikova were upset towards the final.
On the Boys Side, Wimbledon Boys champion Ivanov has strongly added another slam title to his list of growing accolades. The No. 1 seed defeated his compatriot Alexander Vasirev 7-5, 6-3 in the All-Bulgarian matchup, which was praised by many Bulgarian flags in Stan DS.
“The Bulgaria complete final and the Ful Bulgaria crowd,” Ivanov said with a smile. “I’m so happy that this happened. I’m so happy that you were successful today.”
In the doubles, sisters Arena Kobaccaba and Jana Kobackoba beat Vandrom and her partner Raima Vladson, while Keaton Hans and Jack Kennedy won the boys’ titles to Noah Johnston and Benjamin Wilwelt in the All-American finals.
