Sunderland already plans to sign defender in January

Sunderland is reportedly already creating key plans for the January transfer window as they are trying to bolster their defense.

The Black Cat wanted to sign Bologna defender John Lukumi in the summer, but the Serie A Giants held it firmly and did not allow Columbia international leave.

However, Sunderland was in very high level of consultation with the player at the time, and is expected to try again for him if the transfer window repeats again in January.

South American sources say Sunderland already plans to pursue Lukumi again as a top target, so it will be interesting to see if they have come up with an offer to convince Bologna.

It seems clear that Sunderland has not given up on Rukumi, so they need to have some confidence that he is keen on moving to the Stadium of Light.

The latest report suggests that the 27-year-old wants to play in the Premier League, but he has not yet signed a new contract with the current club.

Bologna is currently tied up until 2027, so if he shows no indication that he agrees to a new deal, it may soon be wise for them to consider his offer.

If Italians kick the road through the summer of 2026, they certainly need to consider offers that are far below the market value of Lukumi.

Or maybe they’ll lose him for free in a year, so this certainly seems like someone who’s going to see again in January.
