After his latest controversial decision, a Sky Sports critic confirmed that if he was on the current Rangers team he would “absolutely smoke” with Russell Martin.
Martin: Some fans didn’t want me to begin with.
Five league games, Zero won and sat in 10th place. That’s tragic for the Ranger under Martin. The humiliation of their Champions League at the hands of Club Bruges can almost be tolerated – placed only on the devastation of better opposition – but that excuse cannot be applied to the Scottish Prime Minister.
GERS has endured a historically poor start, and writing is probably already on Martin’s walls. Martin admitted that he didn’t want him at Ibrox in the first place after being defeated by Hart.
“I can’t come out here and criticize because fans have the right to receive their opinions. We have a lot of new people. We have a lot of players trying to feel their way in an environment where it’s really hard to feel their way. It’s really, really difficult.
“So we need to make sure they are OK as humans first and improve their performance. But there’s a sense of concern at this point. The players are not the teams they’ll see in training when they leave and play in this environment on Thursday and Friday.
“And that’s not a criticism of anyone. But we just have to keep working.”
The next one after the Rangers is Hibernian’s visit in the quarterfinals of the Scottish League Cup. As things stand, it appears that Martin will take charge of the game and maintain support for the 49ers. Whether another defeat will change is a question of everyone pondering.
Certainly not helping the manager’s case is the latest decision he made, which has led to criticism from Jamie O’Hara.
O’Hara: “I smoke” on a trip to Lake Lomond
When Buck faces the wall, managers often get creative with their approach, and so does Martin. On the way to a terrifying run, the Rangers boss went to Lake Loymond for a Team Bond trip, featuring wild swimming and mountain hiking. O’Hara, like many, shares his opinions on strangely-timed trips, targeting Martin.
The former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder told Sky Sports: “If I were a player, I would definitely smoke. Why would I want to go swimming at Lake Lomond as a team bonding session?
“Give me a golf club. Play LochLochLomond, get out a fishing rod and go on the boat of the day, and it’s fair enough.
Only time will tell if the Rangers’ very literal climbing will form, but for now it is the latest in Martin’s latest list of decisions.
