American tennis player Taylor Townsend apologized in China on Wednesday morning.
Posting a video on her Instagram Stories, Townsend praised her experience in the country and expressed her gratitude for being able to experience so many different locales through her work.
“I just wanted to come here and give my heart apologise. I understand that I am extremely privileged to travel the world as a professional athlete and experience cultural differences.
“I didn’t have just the most amazing experience and time here and in the tournament. Everyone was so kind and kind, and what I said is not representative at all. I just want to apologise. There’s no excuse. It’s not good for me.
Townsend, the world’s top ranked doubles player, previously posted a video of the spread at a Chinese restaurant, questioning the entire experience the morning after Tuesday. One typical caption: “Ima has to talk to HR.
The comments sparked a huge backlash against Townsend, flooding her Instagram with comments attacking her character.

Townsend is in China as a Team USA doubles specialist. This is one of eight teams competing in the final stages of the international women’s tennis tournament. The Americans will have their first game on Thursday. Townsend is unlikely to see a warm reaction alongside his partner McCartney Kessler.
The incident occurs less than three weeks after Townsend entered the headline for very different reasons. Townsend was in a post-match conflict with doubles rival Jelena Ostapenko while competing in singles at the US Open, where the Latvian later reported that he said “no class” and “no education.”
Ostapenko later apologized and denounced the language barrier for his choice of words. Meanwhile, Townsend tied her best singles results of all time in a grand slam by reaching the fourth round with Flushing Meadows, reaching the doubles final with partner Kathegina Senior Kova.
