Liverpool will face Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League tonight, leading 3-2 in stop time thanks to a slow goal from Captain Virgil Vandic.
Andrew Robertson and Mohamed Salah raised Liverpool to 2-0 in the first six minutes of the game, but the Reds were unable to make the most of their advantages. They waste multiple opportunities to increase their leads, and Atletico Madrid returned to the game through Marcos Lorente’s braces.
Virgil Van Dijk wins the Liverpool game
As the game was heading towards a deadlock, Captain Virgil van Dik headed to what proved to be a winning goal for the game to close the time of his injury deeply.
Liverpool missed many opportunities
Liverpool is the dominant team for most of the game and will be disappointed by the way they missed out on so many opportunities. If they want to do well this season, they need to be more clinical in the coming weeks. To the top team, these mistakes can prove costly.
Meanwhile, Liverpool has developed a habit of winning games later, which certainly shows the champion mentality within the team. It will be interesting to see if they can build on an impressive start to the season and deliver more persuasive performances in the future. They definitely have a quality team, but they looked defensively vulnerable.
If they want to win a major trophy this season, they will need to close in the back and convert goalscoring opportunities.
