The 45th edition of the Ryder Cup may be the biggest ever. The 2025 Ryder Cup in Farmingdale, New York is surrounded by calendars of all golf fanatics, spectators and even players themselves.

The Bethpage Black biennial event is a setting where the US tries to regain the Rider Cup in the soil at home. Although he won the final two events in the US, including a record 19-9 victory in the Whisling Strait in 2021, red, white and blue can be seen to continue to live on this trend after Europe gained the edge in play in Rome in 2023.

Meanwhile, Europe is about to become the first road team to win the Ryder Cup since the team achieved its feat in Medina in 2012. Roty Capthing Luke Donald was a player on that team, as was Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose. Blue and Gold overcame a 10-6 deficit on the final day of the competition, shocking the Americans now known as “Miracle at Medinah.”

For almost 100 years of events, the US has retained the edge of the 27-15-2 series. While Americans are solidly at the top overall, Europeans enjoy far more success these days. With 11 rider cups since the turn of the century, Europe has raised the cup eight times, holding a record of 2-3 in US soil.

2025 Rider Cup Style, Rules

The first two days of the Ryder Cup (Friday and Saturday) are firmly established in team-based golf. Golfers from the US and Europe compete in two sessions each day. There are foursomes (alternative shots) in the morning and four balls (best balls) in the afternoon. On the third day, held on Sunday, you’ll see golfers compete head-on in singles matches.

Foursome (Friday, Saturday morning): When the golfer hits the same ball until he drills a hole, two teams from each side will oppose each other. For example, if player A hits a tee shot at No. 1, he is responsible for teeing off over all the strange holes. Player B approaches first by turning the even-numbered hole where Player B hits the T-shut shot and Player A becomes second.

There are important strategies to shape these pairings, taking into account the considerations given to equipment, personality and skill set. So the format has proven essential to victory in the last two Ryder Cups, as the US went 6-2 in 2021 and Europe went 7-1 in 2023.

4 balls (Friday, Saturday afternoon): Two teams from both sides compete against all four golfers playing their balls. The lowest score between two players on each team counts that hole, and the other two scores are essentially discarded.

Single (Sunday): The entire American and European side will compete in 12 1-1 matches. Unlike the President’s Cup, where the captain announces each spot in the lineup one after another, the Ryder Cup makes sure that the captain fills the lineup without knowing what the other side is doing.

2025 Ryder Cup Scoring

Event Scoring: A total of 28 points are available for grabs throughout 3 days and 5 play sessions. Europe won the 2023 Ryder Cup and owns the trophy, so they only score 14 points to hold, while the US needs at least 14.5 points to win perfectly.

Match Scoring: Each match is worth 1 point. Matches that end with a tie will receive 0.5 points on each side. Each hole is scored independently with the lowest score victory. If both teams or players have the same score in the hole, the hole is considered tied.

There is a nuance in matchplay scoring. For example, if Team A wins the first two holes, the lead will be noted as “2 Up.” If Team B wins the third hole, Team A holds a “1 Up” lead, reducing the margin. Therefore, if lead exceeds the number of remaining holes, the match can be completed before all 18 holes are regenerated. Team A is 4 up from 4 holes to 15 holes and ends the match with a score of 4 and 3 (4 – margin, 3 – holes remaining).

Concessions: This is a bit controversial in recent iterations of the Ryder Cup. Unlike stroke play, teams and players do not need to complete each hole if the other side decides that the next shot is very McCubble, or if attempting a stroke does not earn or tie a hole.
