Gael Monfils announced that next season will be his last as a professional tennis player.
The 39-year-old Frenchman won his first ATP Tour title 20 years ago, reaching sixth in the world rankings, and in 2008 he took the semi-finals at Roland Garros’ home soil, then opened eight years later.
But what he has made him a favorite around the world was the athletic style that pleases the crowds of Monfils, writing in X, “It’s joy, pure joy, spills that you see.”
World No. 53, who is married to fellow professional Erina Svitrina, said, “When you love something, it doesn’t feel like a good time to say goodbye. But 40 is the right time for me.”
