PGA apologizes to Rory McIlroy’s wife Erica Stoll after being targeted by Ryder Cup’s Hecklers

The PGA announced an apology to Erika Stole after she and her husband, Rory McIlroy, experienced heckling from both Heather McMahan and the other participants in the Ryder Cup on September 26th.

The tournament, held at Bethpage Black Golf Course in Farmingdale, New York, is a biennial golf tournament between the United States and Europe. The 38-year-old Stoll was attacked with a beer can, and both her and the Northern Ireland golfer (36) were subjected to several verbal insults. At another point, 38-year-old McMahan took the megaphone and promoted the chant “f —you, Rory.”

“Heather has expanded his apology to Rory McIlroy and Ryder Cup Europe and has resigned from holding the first tee of the Ryder Cup,” the PGA of America said in a statement to BBC Sports.

On Thursday, October 2nd, PGA of America President Donlea Jr. apologized in a letter obtained by the Associated Press to members of the PGA of America.

“Let’s start with what we have to own. The competition was thriving, especially at the US team rally on Sunday afternoon, but some fans’ actions clearly crossed the line,” writes Rea. “It was disrespectful, inappropriate and not representing who we are as American PGAs or American golf professionals. We clearly condemn the actions.”

In an interview with Athletic On Wednesday, October 1st, PGA of America CEO Derek Sprague said he had a long call with McIlroy’s manager Sean O’flaherty. Sprague, who has been leading the organization since January, has denounced McMahan and his fans for their actions.

“I sent a long email to share with Rory and Erica and told him that we’ll be better in the future,” Sprague said. Athletic. “I’m the CEO now. I don’t tolerate this type of behavior. This isn’t good for the game of golf. It’s not good for the Ryder Cup. It’s not good for the professional athletes.

“What I’m disappointed in the actions of the fans and the disappointment with the first tee and the host is that it’s not us,” Sprague continued. “And I was really, really, really, really disappointed.”

In his letter, Rea also pointed out that Sprague apologized to Erica’s McIlroy and to “everyone at Ryder Cup Europe.”

The next Ryder Cup will be held in Ireland in 2027. Sprague said Athletic He plans to meet his European counterparts and “make sure to focus on what the Ryder Cup is.” This is “decoration, sportsmanship and integrity.”
