Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai has been a little unlucky so far this season, playing a few games as an urgent right-back.
The Hungarian international has shown a lot of quality in midfield or attacking midfield throughout his career, including his first two seasons at Liverpool.
Still, Arne Slott has been plagued by some injury issues this season, which means Szoboszlai will be shifted to cover on the right side of defence.
But it seems clear that the Reds manager needs to try something different. This is because it is not a position in which he is very well adjusted and his quality is also lacking in the middle of the park.
Hungary’s Dominik Szoboszlai shines against Portugal
Szoboszlai returned to the national team’s midfield on Tuesday night and made the most of his impact in that position, scoring one goal and providing one assist in the 2-2 draw with Portugal.
The 24-year-old received a rating of 8/10 from WhoScored for being one of the best players on the pitch and reminding everyone of what he is capable of when used correctly.
The slot certainly needs to be looked at and find another solution to the right-back problem, but of course replacing Trent Alexander-Arnold was never easy.
Szoboszlai deserves a bigger role at Liverpool
In fact, Szoboszlai’s excellent performance tonight makes you think he might be a better option than summer’s big-money signing Florian Wirtz.
It’s no surprise that the German international is the first choice for LFC’s number 10 role, but that hasn’t happened yet since his big move from Bayer Leverkusen.
Wirtz should improve over time, but for now Szoboszlai looks more suited to start in that kind of role at Liverpool than to be used as a slotted utility player.
