  • Jurgen Klopp’s decision on Darwin Nunez has reportedly caused tension behind the scenes at Liverpool.
  • Jurgen Klopp may not be the best when it comes to recruiting players

The signing of high-profile forward Darwin Nunez in the summer of 2022 has been widely cited as a key moment demonstrating Jurgen Klopp’s growing transfer powers, and could lead to the departure of highly-rated sporting director Michael Edwards later that year.

Michael Edwards has publicly stated that his departure was planned after 10 years and was due to a strong belief in change, but reports suggest there is potential tension between manager Jurgen Klopp’s personal preferences and the club’s established data-based recruitment model.

The Athletic’s James Pearce revealed that Klopp insisted on signing Nunez for £64m, despite objections from the analytics department, which favored other data-backed targets such as Christopher Nkunku and Alexander Isak.

Liverpool’s former head of research Ian Graham also recently revealed that although the data rated Nunez and Isak highly, Klopp ultimately chose Nunez, which caused friction.

However, it reportedly did not fail, and Mr. Edwards and Mr. Ward eventually resigned, citing exhaustion.

In response to a question about whether there was a power struggle between Klopp and Edwards, Pearce said:

“A good example would be the signing of Darwin Nunez from Benfica in the summer of 2022, which was largely driven by Klopp. Former Liverpool head of research Ian Graham has spoken about how that was not a data-based decision. Christopher Nkunku (then RB Leipzig) and Alexander Isak (then Real Sociedad) were two names that were put forward.

“There have been occasional frictions, but as far as I know there have been no major disruptions. Both Edwards and Ward have resigned as sporting director because they were tired after more than 10 years at Liverpool and needed a break.”

Jurgen Klopp may not be the best when it comes to recruiting players

As has been clear from previous episodes, making decisions about players is not Klopp’s strongest suit.

It was previously revealed by manager Ian Graham that the German was pushing to sign Julian Brandt over Mohamed Salah in 2017, and the only reason the Reds ended up signing Salah was because of the combined efforts of Edwards and Graham to persuade Klopp.

Meanwhile, Edwards and his team have built a solid portfolio of successful signings backed by data and have earned a reputation as one of the best football minds of our time.
