Liverpool have been linked with a move for Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck in recent weeks.
However, Sky Sports’ correspondent Florian Plettenberg confirmed that Liverpool have no concrete interest in signing the German defender, with Dortmund keen to tie the “top defender” to a new deal. Schlotterbeck has been linked to the Reds in the past.
Meanwhile, German champions Bayern Munich have expressed interest in signing him. Whether they can complete the deal remains to be seen.
Reds could use Nico Schlotterbeck
It’s no secret that Liverpool need a quality central defender, and the German would have been a useful signing. Ibrahima Konate could leave the club at the end of the season when his contract expires. The France international has not signed a contract extension with the Premier League champions and Liverpool need to find a quality replacement.
Schlotterbeck might have been helpful.
Schlotterbeck has proven himself in the Bundesliga and there is no doubt that he has what it takes to play in the Premier League. He could have been a quality addition. The player is at the peak of his career and could have made an immediate impact at Liverpool.
It will be interesting to see if Liverpool can find a quality replacement if Konate decides to leave in the summer. Losing him on a free transfer would be a huge blow for the Premier League champions.
They recently lost Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid on a free transfer, and letting a key player leave on a free transfer could set a dangerous precedent. They will no doubt be hoping to convince the French international to commit his future to the club until the last moment.
