Ryder Cup 2025: Rory McIlroy ‘proud’ of conquering US despite battling insulting and obnoxious fans

The throughline for this 2025 Ryder Cup was a tense exchange between Rory McIlroy and an American fan at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, New York. McIlroy has been subjected to a variety of obscene, unpleasant and insulting abuse from a supposedly rowdy crowd, but still respectable by Ryder Cup standards.

McIlroy and Shane Lowry – European teammates, playing partners and long-time friends – were seen kicking someone in the gallery on Friday. Things escalated on Saturday, when McIlroy was seen swearing at the crowd, refusing to putt during his backswing until the fans quieted down, screaming in joy after making a birdie putt and pointing at the scoreboard as Europe continued to trail the United States.

Things got so out of hand that extra police officers and state troopers were added to provide security for the four-ball game between Lowry and Justin Thomas and Cameron Young.

Despite the hostile conditions, McIlroy and Lowry won soundly and extended Europe’s lead, ultimately making it 11.5 to 4.5 by the end of the day. Personally, McIlroy has an overwhelming record of 3 wins, 0 losses, and 1 loss through the first four sessions.

“When you play away in the Ryder Cup, it’s really, really challenging,” McIlroy told NBC after the game, in a rather diplomatic manner, when asked if the crowd was taking things too far. “You know, that’s not for me to say. People can decide for themselves if we went too far. You know, I’m just proud that we were able to win today with what we had to go through.”

McIlroy wasn’t the only golfer with an edge Saturday. For example, Bryson DeChambeau had to be restrained after some tense words were exchanged between Justin Rose and DeChambeau’s caddy.

Saturday was yet another example of how different the Ryder Cup is from other golf events. And while competition and environment have brought out the best in some golfers, they have outperformed others. For McIlroy, his fiery spirit overcame a more hostile atmosphere than it deserved, proving once again why he is the best player of his generation.
