Bayern Munich continued their perfect start under coach Vincent Kompany with another dominant victory in the Champions League group stage this week, defeating Club Brugge 4-0.
At the heart of Bayern’s continued success was the talismanic Harry Kane, who scored the opening goal just 14 minutes into the game.
This particular goal was more than just a record. It etched the England captain’s name into history and cemented the most prolific start to an individual season in the history of European football.
Harry Kane makes history breaking Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi’s records
Kane’s goal against Brugge was his 20th in all competitions this season, achieved in an incredible span of just 12 games.
This explosive start set a new benchmark for European football, surpassing the previous best times set by two legends.
Lionel Messi achieved the fastest route to 20 goals in 17 appearances, a feat he achieved three times during his Barcelona career.
Similarly, Cristiano Ronaldo’s quickest start was in the 2014/15 season, when he needed 13 games.
Kane has continued to be an incredible goalscorer for Bayern this season, scoring 12 goals in the Bundesliga, four in the Champions League and four in other domestic competitions.
The 32-year-old is performing at the best level of his career and if he continues this pace he could easily surpass 50 goals this season.
Harry Kane’s return to the Premier League is in the spotlight, with Alan Shearer’s Premier League record in the spotlight
Despite his success and record-breaking results in Germany, speculation remains swirling over the former Tottenham star’s eventual return to the Premier League.
The biggest motivation remains the only major national record he has yet to achieve. That’s Alan Shearer’s 260th Premier League goal total.
Kane currently sits second on the list with 213 goals and needs 47 more goals to take the coveted top spot.
Tottenham are said to be in pole position to re-sign Kane next summer, but will face stiff competition from other clubs, including Manchester United.
The north London club are said to be preparing an offer of €80 million for the player to return.
The Red Devils have expressed interest in signing the long-time England star and are keen to secure his continued involvement, with reports suggesting Kane will be their top target next season.
The striker has recently suggested he is fully committed to Bayern and could stay beyond the end of his contract in 2027, but his friends and family still believe a return to the Premier League is inevitable.
The clauses in his contract are rumored to become more affordable next summer, suggesting that if Kane wins more major European silverware this season, the time may be right to chase the last great goal of his career.
