Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has been praised by pundit Peter Crouch for his return to action after much criticism and ridicule.

Maguire hasn’t had the easiest time at Old Trafford since his big-money move from Leicester City in the summer of 2019, but he’s still at the club and is looking like an important player for them once again.

The 32-year-old never complained or agitated for a move when the going got tough. And now he is proving the critics wrong about this key role for Man United.

Maguire scored the winning goal late on in United’s 2-1 win away to Liverpool last weekend and Crouch praised his handling of the difficult period.

Ms Crouch felt much of the criticism was unfair and excessive, and singled out herself for praise on the podcast.

“I’m really, really happy for him,” Crouch said.

“I think it was beyond his capacity to experience that much grief.

“The attacks on his family, his character, his appearance, the way he has been demonized at that club were all wrong.

“I just think it shows an absolutely massive failure to go (and perform) consistently.”

The Red Devils are in talks to retain the England international, who is open to extending his stay at the club.

What a redemptive arc this is for McGwire, and well deserved.
