ToggleOdyssey takes aim at one of the barriers to “zero torque” putting with its latest Square 2 Square release.
Trendy putting methods have grown in popularity over the past few years, but many players still shy away from the typical center shaft and on-set design because they’re not used to it.
However, with the new S2S Tri-Hot line, Odyssey moves the axis of the shaft forward, placing the shaft closer to the putter’s leading edge but passing through the putter’s center of gravity to give it toe-up characteristics.
In addition to the new configuration, the putter features a new Ai-Dual inset. This is the next version of Callaway’s Ai-designed face inserts, which were introduced in the Ai-One line two years ago.
Continue reading below for more information on the new S2S Tri-Hot putter line and my thoughts on the new release.
What is the Odyssey S2S Tri-Hot Putter?
The new S2S Tri-Hot putter is unmistakable on the putting green with a new red and black color scheme that traces back to the brand’s colors.
“As we say in the building, our products have to be ‘DSPD,'” Jacob Davidson, Callaway vice president of product strategy, told GOLF. We felt like we wanted to get that red and black – that would be something you would see on TV – that would be true to the Odyssey. ”

The putter is offered in three different popular Odyssey head shapes (No. 7, Rossie, Jailbird, and also available in a 38-inch cruiser configuration). But the next thing you’ll notice about these putters is the forward position of the shaft compared to other low-torque putter options.
Davidson said this allows him to play the putter without worrying about shaft tilt, which has been one of the barriers with low-torque putters for many players. Now you can use a lower torque putter, but make sure to keep your hands in the traditional position.
To accomplish this, Odyssey used a three-piece construction with over 140 grams of tungsten in the putter’s front piece and a lightweight aluminum back piece. So the Tri-Hot name was reintroduced. The insert and tungsten are covered by a steel body to which the shaft is attached.
This putter also features a new Ai-Dual insert designed using artificial intelligence and features a two-layer urethane insert with a soft outer layer and a hard inner layer. The grooves have also been redesigned with a more aggressive 19° slope.

To complete the build, Odyssey is also introducing a new heavier and stiffer SL120 shaft based on player feedback, as well as a new Pistol Plus grip, which was developed when Odyssey noticed that players were overwhelmingly using larger size grips.
Who is the Osyssey S2S Tri-Hot putter suitable for?
This is a common theme with low-torque putters these days, and the S2S Tri-Hot putter is perfect for players who want to try a low-torque putter but have been hesitant due to its unconventional characteristics.
The new Tri-Hot is still a center-shafted putter, but at address the shaft is much closer to the face (though there’s still a bit of onset), making it look a lot like a regular putter, and can be stroked just like a regular putter.
The feel is also a bit more responsive than the original Ai-One insert.

My thoughts!
There was quite a bit of hype when the S2S Tri-Hots first started showing up on the Pro Tour a few weeks ago, and I could see that once I rolled the putter too.
As someone who traditionally doesn’t like mallets, I was drawn to the Rossy because of its smallest shape and found that I didn’t have to adjust my setup like I do with other low-torque putters. You don’t have to adjust your hand position or forward press, and you don’t have to play the ball forward.
The larger grip is also very suitable for low-torque putters, and for people like me who have years of muscle memory to release the toe, it helps keep your hands quiet as you keep the putter naturally square. I’m glad to see Odyssey put the type of grip on the putter that people were putting on their putters anyway.

I wasn’t really into the synthetic inserts. This is because synthetic inserts feel and sound like plastic and feel cheap. This is different in that it’s more responsive while still retaining the soft feel that I like. Additionally, the new grooves seem to produce great roll indoors (I haven’t had a chance to test them outdoors yet). The price ($550) may be surprising for an Odyssey putter, but this putter certainly has a premium feel.
Finally, I think there’s a lot to build on with this release. During my interview with Davidson, I pointed out that the front sections of the three different models are very similar. In theory, it looks like you could create a new back piece and create all sorts of different shapes from the platform.

Odyssey Tri-Hot Square 2 Square #7 Custom Putter
Introduced zero torque forward. Odyssey’s new S2S TRI-HOT putter line is a revolution in the “zero torque” category. By using multi-material construction, we were able to move the center of gravity of these putters far enough forward to allow the shaft to enter the head at the topline, eliminating the need for tilting the shaft and removing one of the biggest barriers to entry for this style of putter. Forward Center of Gravity and Hosel Position By moving the center of gravity forward, we are able to place the hosel spud above the topline, much closer to the face than typical “zero torque” putters, creating a more natural, intuitive and comfortable setup position. MULTI-MATERIAL CONSTRUCTION Through strategic use of aluminum, steel, and over 140 grams of tungsten, we were able to design a “Zero Torque” putter that places over 80% of the weight below the topline, allowing for a forward center of gravity and hosel position. New FRD Groove This new Forward Roll Design groove is deeper and more aggressive. It has a 19° slope that works with the dual layer design to improve forward roll up and down the face.
