Liverpool are considering signing a new central defender next summer, regardless of whether Ibrahima Konate stays or leaves. They have now set their sights on their two main targets, Marc Guehi and Dayot Upamecano, whose contracts are due to expire at the end of the season.
Liverpool have had an interest in Guehi for some time, but it has only been in recent months that they have become interested in signing Upamecano. The Bayern Munich and France star would be a great addition to Arne Slott’s side, but it may be difficult for him to remain at Anfield.
Dayot Upamecano in talks to sign new contract with Bayern Munich
According to Football Insider, manager Pete O’Rourke has revealed that Upamecano is in talks with Bayern over a new contract, but despite this, his future at Bayern remains very uncertain.
“I’m sure[Liverpool]will be hoping that they can sign a player like Upamecano on a possible free transfer in the summer. Look, he’s under contract at the Allianz Arena until the summer, and there are ongoing talks between Upamecano’s agent and Bayern Munich about a new dealer.”
“Bayern are hoping that they can convince the France international to stay, but he has many options and cannot run away from them. If a new contract cannot be agreed, it will probably be a race for his signature now, as so many clubs are ready to sign him on a free transfer. But Bayern are doing everything in their power to keep the France international.”
There is no doubt that Upamecano will be Liverpool’s top player, but for now the game is on to see if they will make the move in January.
