  • Liverpool to face Real Madrid over Dayot Upamecano
    • Upamecano and Guehi named the best center backs in the world

Liverpool are currently in a battle with Real Madrid over the contract of Bayern defender Dayot Upamecano, and a new update has been released regarding his future at the Allianz Arena.

The Reds finally got one over against Madrid on Tuesday night, beating the Spanish team 1-0 at Anfield in the Champions League, thanks to Alexis Mac Allister’s second-half header, the Argentine’s first goal of the season.

It was an impressive result considering Trent Alexander-Arnold returned to Anfield for the first time since his controversial departure in the summer and manager Arn Slott replaced him with Jeremy Frimpong.

However, it’s fair to say that Frimpong hasn’t made an immediate impact, having been used sparingly in the slot even before his latest injury, with the right-back missing out on the last four games in all competitions.

The manager was also keen to sign a new centre-back in the summer, but given Crystal Palace’s failure to sign a replacement, they narrowly missed out on signing Marc Guehi by the deadline, but potential replacements have now been identified.

After beating Real Madrid on the pitch, Liverpool are now looking to beat their European opponents in the transfer market. Reports from Spain have revealed that both clubs are in a battle for Upamecano, but there could be competition from elsewhere.

Premier League rivals Chelsea and Manchester United have also been linked in the race for the defender amid uncertainty over his future at Bayern. Bayern have yet to finalize a new contract that would allow him to extend his stay at the German club beyond the end of the season.

Negotiations over a new contract are currently at an impasse and it has been suggested that the 27-year-old could leave in the summer, but Bayern are unlikely to want to confirm a move in the January transfer window.

Slott is personally a fan of the centre-back and believes the Dutchman could adapt quickly to life in the Premier League and stabilize the backline, and there are plenty of signs that the Liverpool manager could be on the money.

Hailed as “outstanding” by Joshua Kimmich, the Bayern star has extensive experience at the top level, having made 60 Champions League appearances and won 11 trophies during his highly impressive career to date.

Despite the uncertainty over his contract, the Frenchman is also a key player for Bayern Munich, most recently starting in the 2-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain, making six clearances and winning four duels to keep the reigning European champions at bay.

However, Liverpool haven’t always been successful with their signings from the Bundesliga, with Florian Wirths yet to adapt to life in the Premier League and yet to register a goal or assist.

Therefore, it would be less risky to simply return in place of Guehi, who has already proven himself in the Premier League.
