Aston Villa have had to deal with PSR restrictions in recent years, which has led to them selling players they wanted to keep. The same may have been true for John McGinn, who was rumored to be leaving the team in the summer.

McGinn was linked with Newcastle, but in the end it was Jacob Ramsey who moved to St James’ Park. The Aston Villa club captain was also linked with a move to Celtic, and has since signed a new contract, committing his future to Celtic.

Once this was confirmed, McGinn revealed he was fully committed to Aston Villa and spoke out (via the Birmingham Mail) about summer transfer speculation.

“I never thought about leaving. At my age, it gave me a bit of confidence that teams were interested. But I think most clubs around the country realized that we had to be in a selling position this summer. So, while no one was exempt from that, there wasn’t a single player who wasn’t available for a transfer.”

“But when my situation happened, the club made it clear from the first moment that I was not for sale and that I am important here. I am the captain and I am still highly valued. They made it clear. There is no such thing as a gray area. I was told right away, so from that day on my head was completely fine. I trusted the guys who said it – the coach, Damien, Nassef, Wes – they all made it clear they wanted me to be around, and they still felt like I had a lot more to give. ”

McGinn has been a great servant to Aston Villa and will continue to be so for at least a few more years.
