  • Guido Rodriguez is struggling to settle at West Ham
  • Hammers midfielder has multiple suitors

According to El Intransigente, River Plate are reportedly considering a sensational move to bring Argentine midfielder Guido Rodriguez back to South America during the upcoming January transfer window.

The Buenos Aires club are said to be working hard to reunite Rodriguez with his home country, with manager Marcelo Gallardo identifying him as a key target to strengthen his midfield options ahead of the 2025 season.

Rodriguez, who joined West Ham United on a free transfer from Real Betis in the summer of 2024, has had a disappointing time in the Premier League.

Despite arriving with a reputation for tactical discipline and defensive consistency, the 31-year-old has struggled to establish himself in the Irons’ starting line-up.

His limited mobility and lack of speed mean he is unable to adapt to the fast tempo and physical demands of English football, and both player and club reportedly could see him leave midway through the season.

The Argentina international, who has won more than 30 caps for his country, is said to be keen to secure regular playing time in order to secure his place in Argentina’s squad for the 2026 World Cup.

That ambition could make a return to River Plate an attractive option, with Gallardo promising him a central midfield role. The manager is reportedly ‘persistent’ in his pursuit and is confident
Rodriguez’s experience and leadership could make him an important member of the team.

However, River Plate faces stiff competition. El Intransigente reported that Club America, where Rodriguez played from 2017 to 2020, is also interested in bringing him back to Mexico.

Meanwhile, Real Betis and Espanyol are monitoring his situation and hope to lure him back to La Liga if he wants to remain in Europe.

Sources close to the player say Rodriguez’s priority is to remain in Europe, which could complicate River Plate’s efforts.

From West Ham’s point of view, the midfielder’s departure could make sense. The London club are looking to revamp their midfield in January and could use Rodriguez’s departure to free up wages and space for new players.

No formal offer has yet been confirmed, but West Ham are expected to carefully analyze all proposals before deciding on Rodriguez’s future.
