Florian Wirths, a failed signing from Liverpool, has been linked with a possible exchange deal with Real Madrid, and it is reported that he could already leave the club.
Wirtz has struggled since joining Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer and his stay at Anfield could be short-lived.
Former Everton chief Keith Wyness told Football Insider there was growing talk in the industry that Werts could be involved in a swap deal for Real Madrid forward Rodrygo Goes.
What is being said about Florian Wirtz’s shock transfer to Real Madrid?
Appearing on the Football Insider podcast, Wyness, who currently works as an advisor consulting for top football clubs, said he had heard that Wirtz could be linked with a move to the Bernabéu.
This is a bit of a shock as the German international has only been at LFC for a few months, but he seemed confident that this is not something he should be sacked for.
“I think he (Rodrigo) will go to Spurs, but the rumors I heard were that there was a possibility of a swap deal for Werts as part of a move from Liverpool,” Wyness said.
“Now, considering Wirtz’s start, it’s not too much of a stretch of the imagination. I think he would fit more into Real Madrid’s style of play and La Liga’s style of play.”
“I think it could have some currency, and I didn’t rule it out right away.
“But I think in the end it’s Spurs who will pay to get him out of Real Madrid. I expect Spurs to push hard, but that talk of Liverpool and Werts seemed to make some sense to me.”
Should Liverpool let Florian Wirtz leave early?
Most Liverpool fans will be unhappy with Wertz’s slow start to life on Merseyside, but they will also be patient and ready to give him a little more time.
The 22-year-old looked like a world-class talent at Leverkusen, but he didn’t lose all his ability overnight.
Wirtz is certainly capable of more than what he has shown so far for coach Arne Slott’s side, and he may just continue to adapt to the team, new tactics and the demands of playing in a new league.
Meanwhile, it is also clear that Wirths is not the only player struggling at Liverpool at the moment, with German manager Julian Nagelsmann defending him.
Nagelsmann is on record as saying Wirtz was disappointed in the poor performance of his Reds teammates.
Julian Nagelsmann talks about Florian Wirtz
As quoted by Sky Sports, Nagelsmann spoke about Wirtz’s recent struggles, saying: “Liverpool could also help him by scoring some of the chances he has created. For some reason they don’t like to shoot the ball.”
He added: “This year the whole club is not as stable as last year. It’s much harder to integrate into the team now.”
“So it’s also difficult for the flow to have a big impact. Ultimately, in the overall situation, he needs a little more time. That’s normal. We see that with other players who move to the Premier League.”
