Newcastle will be hoping to use the international break to start a season that has so far been disappointing. Eddie Howe’s side sit 14th in the Premier League table, just two points clear of the relegation zone after 11 games.

The international break should allow Newcastle to reset after a difficult few weeks on the domestic front, with one of their former players, Matty Longstaff, also returning to Tyneside. The midfielder, who is the younger brother of current Leeds star Sean, has been playing for CF Montreal since the summer, but has now returned to his hometown in the off-season after a disappointing 28th place finish in MLS.

According to Geordie Boot Boys, Longstaff is working with NE Coaching Company on special training to ensure he is fit before the start of MLS’s 2026 season after the new year. He follows in the footsteps of another former Newcastle player, Jonjo Shelvey, who joined the program.

Longstaff will leave Newcastle in the summer of 2023 when his contract expires, and was originally due to join Toronto FC before the start of the 2024 MLS season, but was involved in a player swap several months ago. He is likely to play in a game for coach Eddie Howe’s team during his return.

Newcastle need to get back on track as soon as possible

The first game Newcastle will play is this weekend against Man City. St James’ Park has provided home comfort for the Magpies, so a good result could be the start of a long unbeaten run, which could help them move up the Premier League table in the coming weeks.
