Man United have had a better season this season, but manager Ruben Amorim remains under scrutiny. It comes at a time when his handling of Harry Maguire has been called into question and the towering defender is trying to decide on his future at Old Trafford.
Maguire’s contract expires at the end of the season and Man United want him to stay, but given he has been on the bench for all but four Premier League games, he may consider leaving to become a regular starter elsewhere.
Harry Maguire could leave Man United due to his role as a player
According to Football Insider, Mick Brown has taken aim at Amorim’s management of centre-backs and backed Maguire as he seeks a more prominent role away from Man United.
“You really have to laugh. It’s almost becoming a joke. We’ve seen it in a lot of games this season, when things are getting tough for Man United, but what does he do? He turns to the bench and brings in Harry Maguire to ensure the situation at the back.”
“That’s fine. If you want to get results, there’s nothing wrong with changing your defense. The problem is, if you think, ‘We need to be more solid, let’s bring in Maguire,’ it just begs the question of why he’s not starting the game in the first place.”
“Amorim thinks Maguire is good enough to make a difference in a struggling team. So why not let Maguire play in the first place? That will obviously affect his future, because if the team doesn’t recognize Maguire’s value to the team, why would he want to stay there?”
“He’s more than capable of being a regular starter at this level and he knows that. So he’ll be looking at his future and what other options he has. When his contract ends, if it’s a choice between being a bit-part player at United or being a regular player somewhere else, that’s definitely going to be a big decision.”
Should Harry Maguire leave Man United at the end of the season?
Maguire had a difficult first few years at Man United but has now become a very reliable figure. He’s a great player to have on your team, but it wouldn’t be surprising if he wanted to be a starter in the final years of his career. Therefore, the possibility of him leaving the team next summer cannot be ruled out.
