Newberry ‘Seduced’ Into Political Race by Skelton Following Panic Attack

Dan Skelton has not dismissed the possibility of entering Panic Attack, the Paddy Power Gold Cup winner, in the Coral Gold Cup. The nine-year-old mare, owned by Brian Drew, showcased her talent in the headline race at Cheltenham last Saturday, delivering a proud moment for the Skelton team and securing trainer Harry Skelton’s first victory in that event.

Initially, Skelton aimed to prepare Panic Attack for the Festival Mares Chase at Prestbury Park, with plans to next compete in the Yorkshire Silver Veyes Mares Chase at Doncaster during the Christmas period. However, the trainer of Lodge Hill confessed he is also considering the prestigious Newbury handicap on November 29.

“Panic Attack is still eligible for the Coral Gold Cup, so I can’t ignore the opportunity,” Skelton explained. “I had been thinking about Doncaster next, but if she’s willing and shows she’s ready, she’s nine now and won’t be around for many more seasons. She will take a four-pound penalty and Harry won’t be able to ride her like at Newcastle, so Tristan Darrell, who gets a five-pound claim, will ride her, meaning she’ll carry just one pound more than she did at Cheltenham. I’m definitely tempted.”

Fan Take: This update highlights the thrilling unpredictability of the jump racing season, with a top contender like Panic Attack weighing strategic options for major races. For horse racing enthusiasts, it signals an exciting build-up to the Coral Gold Cup and the potential for more memorable performances that keep the sport vibrant and competitive.
