Lossiemouth Set to Make Waves in 2-Mile Qualifying Challenge at Punchestown

Lossiemus showed strong potential for the Champion Hurdle after playing a key substitute role in the Unibet Morgiana Hurdle at Punchestown. Trainer Willie Mullins has had exceptional success at the last three Cheltenham Festivals, with victories in the Hutton’s Grace Hurdle and the Aintree Hurdle last season, though the shortest distance races like the Christmas Hurdle and Irish Champion Hurdle have eluded a record for her.

With the top two-mile contender Statesman sidelined for the season, Mullins is giving Rich Rich, a striking gray horse, the chance to make an early impression over two miles in a race where Closutton Yard holds a record 13 wins. Patrick Mullins, who won this race in 2021 riding Sharjah, sees Lossiemus’s opportunity to secure Champion Hurdle qualification as significant despite past challenges at this distance against competitors like Constitution Hill.

Mullins also fields other promising runners, including the Grade 1-winning Ireland, stepping out of novice races to test himself against tougher competition. Owned by JP McManus, Ireland is seen by experts as a formidable challenger for Lossiemus. Trainer Mullins believes Ireland has great potential and resilience, despite limited racing experience so far.

Gordon Elliott, the only other trainer besides Mullins to have won this event since 2011, is entering Derwy, who faced tough competition a year ago but aims to take advantage of this opportunity despite the stiff field. Completing the lineup is David Kelly’s Glen Kiln, associated with the legendary Bow family’s colors and reminiscent of Limestone Lad. Kelly acknowledges the need for improvement but is optimistic about learning from the experience and competing without pressure.

This compact but quality field, highlighted by the likes of Lossiemus, Ireland, and Derwy, promises intense competition with plenty of prize money at stake. Kelly sums up the sentiment: while the competition is fierce, you can’t win if you don’t participate.

Fan Take: This upcoming race is a crucial battleground for emerging two-mile hurdlers, potentially reshaping the Champion Hurdle landscape. Horse racing enthusiasts should watch closely—these talented contenders reflect the sport’s vibrant future and thrilling unpredictability.
