Everyone connected to the NBA should be cautious around Chicago Bulls wing Kevin Huerter, as he might weakly throw the ball in your direction.
During the Bulls’ 143-107 defeat to the Miami Heat in Friday’s NBA Cup game, one of the most unusual ejections of the young season took place. In the third quarter, Huerter made excessive contact with Miami’s Pere Larsson, resulting in a blocking foul call.
Frustrated, Huerter tossed the ball into the air toward referee Che Flores, who immediately called a foul. The ball lightly bounced and hit Flores on the right leg, but he didn’t react right away. However, veteran official Tony Brothers, who is rumored to be a mayoral candidate, gave Huerter a technical foul and ejected him from the game on the spot.
This ruling was confirmed after review.
For those interested, Article 12, Section 5 of the NBA Rulebook outlines technical fouls and ejections related to unsportsmanlike conduct, such as being disrespectful to officials, physical contact with staff, or overt actions showing displeasure with calls or non-calls. Abusive language or behavior toward officials, consistent criticism, and excessive misconduct can also lead to technical fouls and potentially ejection.
Brothers seemed to consider Huerter’s actions as crossing the line into “excessive misconduct.”
Fortunately for the Bulls, they were already trailing 78-57 by that point in the challenging game at the United Center. The Heat had a strong showing with eight players scoring in double digits, dominated rebounds 53-39, and recorded 13 steals as a team.
Huerter likely took the lesson to heart, ending the game with three points on 1-of-4 shooting off the bench, along with two rebounds, one steal, and one block.
Fan Take: This incident highlights the importance of player conduct and respect toward officials—a key element in maintaining the integrity and flow of the game. For fans, it’s a reminder that emotional control on the court can impact both individual careers and team performance, shaping how the sport is played and perceived.
