The mixed martial arts community is mourning the loss of a legendary figure, Duke Rufus, who passed away peacefully in his sleep at 55. Known for coaching UFC champions Anthony “Showtime” Pettis and Tyron Woodley, Rufus was a revered trainer, mentor, and innovator who profoundly impacted the sport. Scott Joffe, a lead coach at Rufus’ gym, Roofsport MMA Academy, shared the sad news on Facebook, highlighting Duke’s role not only as a top MMA coach and champion kickboxer but also as a beloved mentor and friend. Rufus’ passion and knowledge inspired fighters of all levels, from world champions to beginners, leaving a lasting legacy in the MMA world.

Rufus transitioned from a successful kickboxing career—where he was an eight-time world champion with a 36-8-1 record—to a full-time MMA coach in 2008. His most notable pupils include the Pettis brothers, with Anthony winning the UFC lightweight title and Sergio claiming the Bellator bantamweight championship, alongside UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley and Bellator/ONE titleholder Ben Askren. The Roofsport gym also trained notable fighters such as former UFC champions Belal Muhammad and Rose Namajunas, as well as WWE star CM Punk, underscoring Rufus’ wide-reaching influence in combat sports.

Despite the loss, Roofsport MMA Academy vows to carry on Duke’s legacy, embracing the values of respect, dedication, and family that he instilled. His philosophy and spirit will continue to guide the athletes and coaches who train under his name, ensuring that his profound impact on MMA endures.

Fan Take: Duke Rufus’ passing is a huge loss for fighting fans because he was more than just a coach—he was a visionary who shaped some of the sport’s greatest athletes. His influence helped elevate MMA to new heights, and his legacy will continue to inspire the next generation of fighters and trainers alike.
