Coach’s Insights on Recent Player Performances

Just a few days after concluding his most successful U.S. camp in 13 months, the head coach has maintained his undefeated record with two notable victories over South American teams, securing a World Cup opportunity. Mauricio Pochettino also took a moment to review the European leagues and Major League Soccer playoffs over the past weekend.

The coach, originally from Argentina, plans to monitor his players’ performances and recovery for the next four months as they head into intense matches before the U.S. men’s national team meets again in March for the next international tournament.

He hopes players remain injury-free and in peak condition ahead of the nine-day tournament slated for metro Atlanta, along with upcoming high-stakes friendlies against Portugal and Belgium.

From the recent camps in suburban Philadelphia and Tampa, the head coach has identified around 20 other players to consider for selection, with a total of 26 spots available for the World Cup squad in late May.

Italy

Christian Pulisic, who was absent from the U.S. camp this month due to a hamstring injury, found the net in the 54th minute, helping AC Milan secure a 1-0 victory over Inter Milan. This marked his first goal since late September, his fifth in Serie A this season. Pulisic played for 78 minutes, the most he has logged since a friendly against the U.S. and South Korea in September, and Milan currently sits second in Serie A.

Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie, also not part of the U.S. squad this month, played the full match in a 1-1 draw against Fiorentina. Meanwhile, Yunus Moussa did not feature in Atalanta’s 3-1 loss to Napoli, with only 31 minutes of action since the beginning of October.

England

Two usual U.S. team members did not make it to this month’s camp. Tyler Adams, recovering from a head injury sustained right before the international break, played 80 minutes in a draw for Bournemouth. Chris Richards, who featured for Crystal Palace in their 2-0 victory over Wolverhampton, limped off the field with cramps but was not called up to the U.S. team this time.

Anthony Robinson, who has struggled with knee issues, missed another game for Fulham and will be sidelined for nearly two months, raising doubts about his chances for the national team. Haji Wright also sat out due to a quadriceps injury while Coventry City is doing well in the English Championship.

Meanwhile, midfielder Aidan Morris continues to play regularly for Middlesbrough, while Patrick Agyeman was a starter for Derby County, and Josh Sargent is facing challenges with Norwich City.

Scotland

Cameron Carter-Vickers has been sidelined with an Achilles injury, but Auston Trusty took this chance to shine for Celtic. Following a 90-minute performance against Uruguay, Trusty helped secure a 1-0 win against St Mirren, marking his fifth start with the club lately.

Germany

Malik Tillman scored Bayer Leverkusen’s only goal during a victory against Wolfsburg, marking his return to the starting lineup after October. Gio Reyna continued his comeback, coming on as a substitute in a win for Mönchengladbach.

France

Tim Weah, who missed camp due to a foot injury, scored in Olympique Marseille’s 5-1 win over Nice, marking his first Ligue 1 goal since transferring from Juventus. Tanner Tessman maintained his position as a starter for Olympique Lyon.

Netherlands

Sergiño Dest, recovering from ACL surgery, returned to play for PSV Eindhoven in a match against NAC Breda. Ricardo Pepi resumed his role as a substitute.

MLS

Roman Celentano’s FC Cincinnati faced a heavy loss against Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Meanwhile, Sebastian Berhalter displayed strong leadership in a penalty shootout victory for Vancouver against LAFC.

Other Regions

Johnny Cardoso has remained in Atletico Madrid’s matchday squad after recovering from injury, while Alex Zendejas is preparing for Liga MX quarterfinals after leaving the previous camp with a knee issue.
