Former NBA star Rick Fox revealed on Monday that he is entering the political arena in the Bahamas. Through a social media announcement, Fox declared his intention to run for a seat in the Bahamas House of Representatives in the 2026 election.

Fox emphasized the urgency for progress in the Bahamas, stating, “The Bahamas has to come first, and the time to act is now.” He further explained, “I am officially announcing my candidacy for the upcoming general election.” Reflecting on his recent experiences, Fox shared, “For months, I’ve heard the hopes and concerns of my fellow Bahamians, and it’s evident that the future of the Bahamas hinges on the decisions we make today.”

Born in Toronto to a Bahamian father and Canadian mother, Fox moved to the Bahamas during childhood and was raised in Nassau. He started playing basketball in high school and later attended the University of North Carolina, where he played under Hall of Fame coach Dean Smith for four years.

Fox enjoyed a 13-year NBA career, playing first for the Boston Celtics and then joining the Los Angeles Lakers in 1997. While with the Lakers, he won three championships alongside legends Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant.

Since retiring from professional basketball in 2004, Fox has ventured into acting and various businesses, including gaming, private equity, and sustainable building projects. He is launching his political career as the Bahamas continues its recovery from the devastation caused by Hurricane Dorian in 2019. Fox’s campaign platform highlights essential issues such as world-class healthcare, affordable housing, and community safety.
