Paul Pogba made his long-awaited return to competitive football on Sunday, making his debut for Monaco after an 811-day hiatus. The former Manchester United star entered the match at Roazon Park during the 85th minute, receiving a warm welcome from fans who appreciated the significance of the occasion for him.

The Wait of 811 Days Concludes in Brittany

Even though Pogba’s comeback occurred while the score was already 4-0 in favor of Monaco against Rennes, the match took a turn after a red card shown to captain Denis Zakaria before halftime. Despite being aware of the impending defeat, Pogba’s return was more meaningful than the scoreline. Monaco ultimately lost 4-1, marking their second consecutive match with the same outcome, which positioned them at eighth place in Ligue 1. For Pogba, this was not just about the game but about returning to the sport he loves.

From Doping Controversy to Comeback

His return follows a challenging chapter that nearly jeopardized his career. In August 2023, while still with Juventus, Pogba tested positive for dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and was provisionally suspended in February 2024, facing a four-year ban. He contended that the result stemmed from unknowingly using tainted supplements. After a successful defense, his suspension was reduced, allowing him to return in March 2025. By the end of last year, Juventus had mutually terminated his contract, leaving him without a club for over two years and denying him competitive play. Despite this, Monaco took a chance on Pogba, welcoming him back to the field.

“I felt a mix of happiness and disappointment over the result,” Pogba shared with League 1+.

“We have made significant progress; today was a step forward. While I’m a bit upset about the loss, I feel good overall. We’ve been training hard and will continue to improve our fitness to play full matches. Initially, it felt strange being back with the team, but we’re all adjusting and finding our rhythm.”

Monaco’s medical team will follow a gradual approach to his recovery over the next three days, aiming to increase his playing time, ultimately targeting complete matches. Pogba, with dreams of representing France in the 2026 World Cup, views Ligue 1 as a critical opportunity to reclaim his place in Didier Deschamps’ squad.

“My short-term goal is to regain full fitness, play for 90 minutes, and contribute to the team,” he explained. “At this moment, playing for my team is what matters. The World Cup is still a while away, and reaching it would be an added bonus.”

Leadership Beyond the Field

Monaco’s manager, Sebastian Pocognoli, emphasizes that Pogba’s contribution extends far beyond his on-field performance. He considers Pogba an essential leader and mentor, responsible for guiding younger players and connecting them to the club’s rich heritage and its ambitions.

“In my first team meeting, I highlighted the importance of our club’s heritage and noted that players like Paul must impart their wisdom to the next generation,” Pocognoli stated. “Experienced players are key to helping our young talent succeed. We need more leaders, as this will help distribute the pressure. If we utilize Pogba effectively, his influence will benefit the entire team.”

Next Challenge Awaits

After 811 days filled with medical challenges and emotional struggles, Pogba is finally back on the field. Currently, Monaco sits in eighth place, just two points shy of fourth-placed Strasbourg. Pogba’s next encounter will be against PSG in Ligue 1 on November 29, and he is eager to log more minutes. “It’s up to the manager, but I’ll be ready to support the team as much as possible,” he remarked. While the journey is long, he has taken the initial steps back to his former self.
