Delta Downs held a special daytime racing event on Wednesday, highlighted by the $100,000 Jean Lafitte Stakes. Trainer Tom Amos secured his second consecutive stakes win, this time with Michael McLaughlin riding Oscar’s Hope, while jockey Vicente Del Cid dominated the competition. The previous day, Amos and Del Cid also teamed up for a win with Actis in the $100,000 My Trusty Cat.

Oscar’s Hope entered the Jean Lafitte as the favorite after a strong victory over Option Claiming Company at Churchill Downs on November 1st. During the race, Oscar’s Hope quickly matched strides with Duke de Vere, leading early with fast splits of 23.56 seconds for the first quarter-mile and 48.91 seconds for the half-mile. As they approached the second turn, Oscar’s Hope pulled ahead decisively from Duke de Vere and the other contenders.

In the stretch, Oscar’s Hope, guided by Del Cid, surged to finish 2 3/4 lengths clear of long-shot Landemonium, who claimed second place. Wayne’s Row came in third, 1 1/4 lengths behind Landemonium. Oscar’s Hope completed the race in 1:32.83 on a fast track.

With this victory, Oscar’s Hope has won 3 of his 5 starts and earned $60,000 from the Jean Lafitte, bringing his total earnings to $231,684.

Bred by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings LLC in Kentucky, Oscar’s Hope is a 2-year-old colt by Twirling Candy out of the mare Hopeful Princess, sired by Not This Time. He was purchased for $150,000 as a yearling at the 2024 Keeneland September Sale.

Starting at 1-5 odds, Oscar’s Hope paid $2.60 to win, $2.10 to place, and $2.10 to show. Landemonium paid $9.20 to appear and $4 for show, while Wayne’s Row returned $2.60 for show.
