Aston Martin’s Mr. Horner Says ‘Baggage on the Table’ Clouds the Team’s Path

David Croft has revealed that Aston Martin has presented an offer to Christian Horner, though he remains skeptical about the former Red Bull team principal actually joining the outfit. Rumors have linked Horner to Aston Martin since reports suggested Andy Cowell might lose his team principal position around the Las Vegas Grand Prix weekend.

In an unexpected move, Aston Martin announced that legendary F1 designer Adrian Newey will become their team principal starting in 2026. However, speculation persists that there might still be a role for Horner within the team. According to BBC Sport, Newey gave a former Red Bull colleague a discreet tour of Aston Martin’s Silverstone factory on Tuesday night.

Croft, ahead of the Qatar Grand Prix, commented on the situation, saying Horner is likely to return to F1 and find a team that values his championship-winning expertise. However, he stressed that Horner will insist on autonomy and the freedom to make decisions, something he felt was lacking during his time at Red Bull. Croft noted that with Lawrence Stroll as chairman, Aston Martin might not offer Horner such independence, as Stroll is known for being very hands-on and having strong opinions.

Croft highlighted a potential conflict regarding driver management, pointing out that Horner might want to replace Lance Stroll, who is under contract for five years and whose father, Lawrence, would not agree to such a move. Given these dynamics, Croft doubts that Horner will actually join Aston Martin, although negotiations and an offer have been made.

Croft also expressed surprise about Newey’s appointment as team principal since Newey’s expertise lies in car design rather than team management. He explained that while the press release emphasized that the role would suit Newey’s strengths, leading personnel and resolving team issues is not what Newey was originally brought in to do. Croft believes this arrangement might be temporary, comments on the leadership style, and questions whether Newey has ever sought such a position.

Fan Take: This news is crucial for racing fans because it hints at significant leadership changes at Aston Martin, which could reshape the competitive landscape in F1. If Horner were to return with full autonomy, it could heighten the intensity of team rivalries, but the current dynamics suggest a complex power struggle, making the future of Aston Martin a key storyline to watch.
