NASCAR Navigates Final Touches on Exciting New Championship Format

NASCAR has yet to disclose the specifics of its new championship format, mainly because a final decision has not been made. It is nearly certain that the 2025 season marked the end of the current playoff system, which features a “Final Four” where the top finishers in a race compete for the championship in the season’s last event. This format was in use from 2014 through 2025.

While a season-long championship without playoffs is unlikely, NASCAR is considering revisiting the 10-race playoff structure it used between 2004 and 2013, or a new elimination format culminating in a four-race points battle among eight drivers. Over the past year, many ideas have been discussed by a committee composed of drivers, team owners, media, TV executives, and Hall of Famers.

Mike Ford, NASCAR’s managing director of racing communications, shared an update on the process during the “Howler Talk” podcast. He mentioned that the playoff committee probably won’t meet again, as their feedback has been gathered. The decision now rests with NASCAR, which will consider all the input received—ranging from no playoffs to maintaining the current system or making significant changes. The announcement could come anytime before February 5th, the date of The Clash, with possibilities for January or sometime in the next couple of months.

Kyle Larson secured his second championship on November 2nd at Phoenix Raceway, having his best points season in the Cup Series. However, Denny Hamlin had to settle for second place after a late-race mishap involving William Byron, which impacted the final restart. The choice to discontinue the current playoff format was made before that race but the event and the fact that it kept Xfinity Series winner Connor Girish from championship contention have emphasized the dissatisfaction many fans feel with the current system.

Fan Take: This announcement is crucial because it signals a major shift in how NASCAR crowns its champion, impacting the excitement and fairness of the sport. For fans, it means a potential fresh start that could restore more traditional competition or bring in innovative formats to keep the championship battle thrilling.
