With nerves of steel, Easton Cowan breaks dry spell with clutch game-tying goal, sealing Maple Leafs’ overtime victory against Blue Jackets

Easton Cowan showed significant improvement last week, demonstrating the kind of player he can be when performing at his peak for the Toronto Maple Leafs. With under seven minutes remaining in the game, Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski scored, putting Toronto down 1-0—a tough setback for a team that had been playing well until then.

This was a moment of true adversity for the Maple Leafs. They faced either suffering their eighth loss in nine games at Nationwide Arena or mounting a late comeback for a win. They chose the latter, beginning just three minutes after Columbus’ goal. John Tavares worked relentlessly to keep the puck in the Blue Jackets’ zone, even down on one knee, passing it to William Nylander behind the net. Nylander quickly sent the puck to Cowan, who scored with a backhand, tying the game—a huge moment as it was Cowan’s first goal in six games and his second of the season. His celebratory reaction highlighted how important this goal was for him.

“It felt great to contribute and help the team,” Cowan remarked.

Nylander later scored the overtime winner, securing Toronto’s first victory in eight days. After 15 NHL games, Cowan has amassed two goals and five assists, totaling seven points. Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube praised Cowan’s play, acknowledging his youth and mistakes but highlighting his determination to learn and his remarkable composure under pressure. “He just plays knowing his abilities and doesn’t feel pressure,” Berube stated.

Cowan’s calmness is well-known, particularly following his standout final junior year, where he led in points during the OHL playoffs and Memorial Cup last spring. Transitioning from junior hockey to the NHL is challenging, but Cowan clearly enjoys being in the moment and pushing for game-changing plays. Nylander described Cowan as “very calm” and “determined,” loving the drive he shows in practice.

Scoring this goal was a confidence boost for Cowan, who had grown visibly frustrated by missed chances in recent games. This goal could be a turning point for both Cowan and the Maple Leafs. Auston Matthews expressed admiration for Cowan’s shot and confidence, emphasizing how important goals are for a player’s momentum.

Matthews praised Cowan’s smart play and foot movement, noting his ability to create opportunities for himself and teammates, and expressed optimism that Cowan will continue to improve.

Fan Take: Easton Cowan’s breakthrough is exciting for hockey fans as it signals the rise of a promising young talent who could make a significant impact for the Maple Leafs. This kind of development energizes the sport by highlighting the next generation of players ready to take the game to new heights.
