Mikel Arteta is confident that Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice has even more potential to showcase as they prepare for Sunday’s match against Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandes and Moises Caicedo.
The three midfielders combined have cost over £300 million, with each signing for nine-figure amounts, solidifying their status as some of the top players in the Premier League this season.
Earlier this week, Rice mentioned that he voted for Caicedo for his 2024-25 Team of the Year, sparking a discussion about who is the superior player. However, Arteta believes that Rice can elevate his game further, despite having shown remarkable consistency over the last year.

When asked if Rice is currently at his best, Arteta responded, “Perhaps in the past it was, but now I understand him better since I work with him daily. There’s even more to come.”
“He aims for more, and the team has a better understanding of him. His role and influence have grown immensely.”
“I’ve known him for a long time (even before he joined) and was aware of how he could transform the team. He has certainly exceeded my expectations.”
While Rice excelled in more defensive roles at West Ham, Arteta has helped him unlock new capabilities in a more advanced midfield position.
The veteran Gunners coach couldn’t recall a specific match that led him to sign Rice, but he always envisioned Rice in this current role.
“You have to consider various factors, but when you see a player live, you feel their energy and charisma along with their skills; it’s truly special,” Arteta reflected.
“Perhaps it was during his time with us that I thought, ‘This player is exceptional.’
“To be honest, I had a role in mind for him that involved different responsibilities, but he can adjust to whatever is asked of him.”
“Right now, we believe that having him play further up the pitch would benefit the team significantly.”
Rice’s leadership presence has grown at Arsenal, and he has expressed a strong desire to help the club achieve success.
Arteta noted, “He’s a significant investment. He was a captain at West Ham and came into a new setting ready to lead. He has truly earned that position.”
“More importantly, he’s deeply involved in everything we do and is an important part of our leadership group.
He has a strong presence and connection with the team; he doesn’t need to wear the captain’s armband to be influential.”
Fan Take: This news is crucial for soccer enthusiasts as it highlights the evolving dynamics of player roles and leadership within teams. The development of talents like Rice could significantly impact Arsenal’s chances for silverware and shape the Premier League landscape for years to come.
