Conor McGregor Shares His Pick for the Winner Before UFC 324 Showdown

Dana White has unveiled a contentious title bout in the lightweight division, once led by Conor McGregor. This announcement, part of UFC’s debut event under its new broadcast deal with Paramount, was made during halftime of the Cowboys vs. Chiefs game on CBS.

Fans hoping for Arman Tsarukyan—a recent submission winner at UFC Qatar—to claim the title were disappointed as Justin Gaethje and Paddy Pimblett were slated to fight for the interim lightweight belt at UFC 324. This came after current champion Ilia Topuria declared a break due to issues with her fighting schedule. The decision sparked debate, with many criticizing the matchmaking and Tsarukyan’s apparent slight. Despite this, McGregor publicly backed Pimblett on social media ahead of the January 24th fight.

Following Topuria’s championship win in June, Gaethje and Pimblett both made strong cases for the next title shot. Gaethje even threatened retirement if denied, while Pimblett leveraged his rivalry with Gaethje to push for the fight. Nevertheless, fans gave mixed reactions, especially with Pimblett’s opportunity to face Michael Chandler stirring controversy. Still, McGregor made sure to show support for Pimblett, tweeting encouragement for the fighter known as “The Buddy.”

Aside from this headline fight, several other matches have also been announced for UFC 324, including Kayla Harrison vs. Amanda Nunes and Sean O’Malley vs. Son Yadong.

Looking ahead, McGregor is eyeing a return to the Octagon in 2026. The former lightweight champ, sidelined since a severe leg injury in 2021, aims for a comeback at the UFC White House event next June. His coach, John Kavanagh, confirmed McGregor’s dedication, noting an intensive training regimen leading up to the fight and a well-coordinated team effort ensuring readiness.

Fan Take: This upcoming lightweight title fight and McGregor’s anticipated return highlight pivotal moments for UFC, blending fresh rivalries with the possible comeback of one of the sport’s biggest stars. For fighting fans, these developments promise excitement and evolution in the division’s landscape, potentially shaping the sport’s narrative for years to come.
