Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr., a 33-year-old from Puerto Rico, has quickly established himself at Churchill Downs following his move from New York. He claimed his first Leading Rider title at the Kentucky track with 44 wins during the 26-day fall meet, marking the highest win total since Julien Leparou’s 63 victories in 2008. Ortiz expressed gratitude for the success he’s found in Kentucky, appreciating the new opportunities with different owners and trainers.

Among Ortiz’s standout victories were the $400,000 Kentucky Jockey Club (G2) aboard Father Add, the $400,000 Falls City (G3) with Alpine Princess, the $225,000 Fern Creek with On Time Girl, and the $200,000 Rags to Riches race featuring Life of Joy—all for top trainer Brad Cox. Ortiz secured two wins in the Stars of Tomorrow II races on November 12.

His younger brother, Jose Ortiz, is second in the rider standings with 35 wins, followed by Luis Saez (28), Tyler Gaffalione (27), and Axel Concepcion (10). Trainer Brad Cox, aged 45 and from Louisville, earned his 10th training title at Churchill Downs with 20 wins ahead of the final day’s races, marking his first fall title since 2017. Cox had an exceptional Saturday with five wins from eight starters, a feat matched only by Steve Asmussen in the official Churchill Downs records since 1991.

Cox’s successful runners on Saturday included Sticker Shock, Kentucky Bell, Swift Blade, On Time Girl, Kilo Tango, Father Add, Life of Joy, and Cannonier. He also became the eighth all-time leading trainer at Churchill Downs, reaching his 500th and 501st wins with Father Add and Cannonier. Cox dominated with 17 wins out of 20 races alongside Ortiz Jr., supported by assistants Katie Tolbert, Trace Messina, and Bryson Cox.

Brendan Walsh ranked second among trainers with 14 wins, followed by Steve Asmussen and Joe Sharp with 12 each, Brian Lynch, and Mike Maker with 9 each. The owners’ championship contest at Churchill Downs concluded with Godolphin holding a lead, aiming for their fifth leading owner title after securing victories including the $400,000 Goldenrod (G2) with Bella Ballerina and six allowance wins. David Jacobson challenged this lead with multiple starters in key races, hoping to claim his second leading owner title.

Fan Take: This dominant performance by Irad Ortiz Jr. and Brad Cox highlights the rising talent and competitive spirit fueling the future of horse racing. Their success not only elevates the sport’s excitement but also promises to inspire new fans and showcase Churchill Downs as a premier venue for top-tier racing excellence.
