Maresca Raises Concerns Over Spotty Refereeing in Chelsea’s Red Card Controversy

Manager Enzo Maresca has voiced concerns over the inconsistency of Premier League referees following Moises Caicedo’s dismissal during the Chelsea versus Arsenal match on Sunday. Caicedo received a red card just seven minutes before halftime at Stamford Bridge after a VAR review of his late challenge on Mikel Merino, officiated by referee Anthony Taylor.

Despite being a man down, Chelsea’s Trevo Chalobah scored first in the 48th minute, but Merino leveled the game shortly before the hour mark.

Maresca accepted Caicedo’s red card but argued that Piero Hincapie should also have faced a sending-off for elbowing Chalobah. He also referenced a yellow card given to Rodrigo Bentancur for a late tackle on Reece James during their recent victory over Tottenham on November 1.

James noted that Hincapie was fortunate to avoid ejection, and Maresca stated, “I think Reece is right… but you ask me about Caicedo’s red card. That is indeed a red. But why wasn’t Bentancur sent off in that match?”

He expressed frustration over the differing decisions, saying, “We find it hard to grasp why the judgments vary. Yes, Caicedo deserved a red. Bentancur should also have received one—so why not issue the card?”

Maresca continued, “What’s baffling is the contrasting judgments. In the end, it was a red card, but the inconsistencies confuse us. I spoke to the referee, who insisted there was no elbow involved, even though Hincapie appeared injured at halftime.”

In another vein, Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta accused Chelsea of attempting to level the playing field by targeting his players with yellow cards after Caicedo’s dismissal.

Arsenal utilized four players in the first half—Martin Zvimendi, Cristian Mosquera, Riccardo Calafioli, and Hincapie. Calafioli was substituted at halftime for Miles Lewis-Skelly, who received a yellow just nine minutes into the second half.

“After Caicedo’s sending off, our aim was to take control of the game,” Arteta said. “However, we fell short, receiving four yellow cards. It was evident our players were frequently targeted to balance the numbers. At halftime, we agreed to halt that approach.”

Fan Take:

This situation highlights ongoing issues with referee consistency in soccer, which can significantly affect match outcomes and overall team strategies. Fans are likely concerned that such discrepancies could impact the fairness of the competition, potentially altering title races and relegation battles in the Premier League.
