  • Luis Eduardo impresses for Chelsea and Man United
  • Blues could have an advantage in race to sign Eduardo

According to a recent report from Spanish media outlet Diario AS, Chelsea and Manchester United have secretly begun talks with Brazilian club Gremio over a possible transfer for 17-year-old centre-back Luis Eduardo.

The Premier League’s two giants are said to be preparing formal offers in the coming weeks.

The race to sign Eduardo highlights just how highly regarded he is. When he signed a new contract with Gremio earlier this year, it reportedly included a €60 million release clause, a deal designed to reflect both his talent and potential and to stop a mass exodus from the club’s academy.

Eduardo’s appeal is easy to understand. Despite being only a teenager, he is already attracting attention due to his combination of size, speed and defensive composure.

Some reports have noted that he is one of the fastest centre-backs in world youth football, a rare quality at his age and position.

Add to that his recent performances for Brazil at the Under-17 World Cup, and it’s clear why Europe’s top clubs are interested in him.

As reported by Diario AS, both Chelsea and United are “already in contact” and are expected to make a formal offer soon.

However, the path to relocation is not easy. Gremio appears intent on holding on to its valuable assets, at least for now. Eduardo is considered a key part of the club’s future plans.

The key question for Manchester United is whether they are prepared to pay such a price for a promising but largely unproven player at the top level.

Given the club’s financial constraints and immediate needs, some Old Trafford officials may think twice about signing a teenager for a €60 million centre-back deal.

Chelsea, on the other hand, operate on a very different and more aggressive transfer strategy.

Their ‘buy now, think later’ attitude means they may be comfortable spending large sums of money on a young, potentially elite defender who could pay dividends in the long term.

The transfer race between the two clubs is expected to be intense, with Chelsea and Man United both targeting him, which goes to show how highly regarded the player is among football’s elite.

The Blues are interested in another young defender with a promising future. Arsenal’s Miles Lewis-Skelly is attracting attention.
