Janibek Alimkanuri to Battle Erislandi Lara Following Positive Test for Banned Substance

The undefeated IBF/WBO middleweight champion Janibek Alimkanuri has tested positive for a banned substance in a drug screening by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (VADA), leading to the cancellation of his unification fight against WBA champion Erislandi Lara. The highly anticipated bout, which was set to take place on Saturday in San Antonio during the undercard of Lamont Roach Jr. vs. Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz, has been called off following confirmation of Alimkanuri’s failed test, which revealed the presence of meldonium.

According to VADA’s report shared by veteran boxing journalist Dan Rafael, meldonium was detected in Alimkanuri’s system. This substance is known to potentially enhance endurance, aid in post-exercise recovery, stimulate the central nervous system, and possibly improve cognitive function, according to the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency’s profile on meldonium.

Alimkanuri boasts an unblemished record of 17-0, including 12 wins by knockout, after a successful amateur stint. He was elevated from interim champion to full WBO champion in 2022 after Demetrius Andrade vacated the belt. Alimkanuri has defended his title twice successfully and added the IBF title in October 2023 by defeating Vincenzo Gualtieri.

Lara, a seasoned fighter and former junior middleweight champion, has been a notable contender, winning the vacant WBA “regular” title in 2021 with an 80-second KO over Thomas LaManna. He was later promoted to full WBA champion after defending his belt against Gary O’Sullivan and has secured victories against Michael Zerafa and Danny Garcia since.

Premier Boxing Champions is actively seeking a new opponent for Lara to continue his defense of the WBA title.

Fan Take: This development is a significant blow to middleweight fans eagerly awaiting the unification clash, as it disrupts the momentum of two top fighters. It also highlights the ongoing challenge of maintaining clean competition in boxing, reminding fans and fighters alike of the importance of fair play for the sport’s integrity.
