NASCAR’s Freshest Champion Responds to Hamlin’s Heartbreaking Title Defeat

The biggest disappointment at Phoenix Raceway on Sunday was how the NASCAR Cup Series championship unfolded. Despite Denny Hamlin leading for 208 of the scheduled 312 laps, an overtime extension to 318 laps caused by William Byron’s tire-related crash altered the race’s outcome. Kyle Larson secured the win using a two-tire strategy, while Hamlin opted for four. Larson, though the winner, acknowledged that Hamlin, a close friend and occasional rival, deserved the championship after performing exceptionally well but losing under what many consider unfair circumstances.

This marked the second time Larson has edged out Hamlin in the championship, the first being in 2021 following a late caution that led to a final restart victory. Hamlin congratulated Larson after that race and even joined the celebration last night, showing true sportsmanship. Larson praised Hamlin’s character for coming out despite the tough loss.

Hamlin expressed hope that his defeat wouldn’t overshadow Larson’s remarkable season, emphasizing that Larson rightfully deserves the championship title. He distinguished between “deserving” and “should be,” reinforcing that Larson’s worthiness is unquestioned. Hamlin plans to personally congratulate Larson, highlighting the strength of their friendship amid the rivalry.

Following the race, Hamlin received widespread sympathy, with many feeling he “should have been” the champion. Byron expressed regret for triggering the caution that disrupted Hamlin’s race, recognizing how unfortunate the situation was. Similarly, other racers, including Truck Series champion Corey Heim and Xfinity Series titleholder Jesse Love, voiced their heartbreak over Hamlin’s loss, showing the deep respect and empathy within the NASCAR community.

Hamlin, known for his sometimes contentious rapport with fans, surprisingly became a sentimental favorite after the event. His teammate Chase Briscoe noted the widespread respect for Hamlin and the genuine emotional reactions from fans and fellow drivers alike. Despite the pain, Hamlin appreciates the support and continues to wish well for Larson, his friend and champion.

Fan Take: This dramatic finish at Phoenix Raceway highlights the emotional highs and lows that make NASCAR so captivating for fans. It underscores how sportsmanship and rivalry coexist, shaping the narrative of the sport and reminding fans why every race, and every decision, carries immense weight in the chase for the championship.
