Josep Guardiola Reveals How Manchester City Almost Squandered a Four-Goal Advantage: ‘We Lost Control of the Game’

London — As the season progresses, Manchester City has transformed its playing style, now focused on maximizing Erling Haaland’s potential. Their thrilling 5-4 victory against Fulham on Tuesday showcased this evolution, although it wasn’t entirely convincing.

For nearly an hour, Haaland and his teammates dominated at Craven Cottage, displaying sharpness in and around the penalty area, skillfully leveraging their physicality. They could have extended their lead to 5-1 when Jeremy Doku’s shot deflected into the net.

However, City secured the win by a slim margin, inching closer to Arsenal at the top of the standings. Fulham deserves credit for their resilience; despite some defensive errors and an unusually poor performance from goalkeeper Bernd Leno, they posed enough of a challenge early in the match. Manager Marco Silva’s aggressive half-time substitutions indicated his belief that a comeback was possible from a 3-1 deficit, even if the points ultimately eluded him.

When Fulham leveled the score, it left City scrambling. Notably, Alex Iwobi’s long-range efforts and Samuel Chukwueze’s deft finishing from outside the box illustrated the chaos of the night. Scoring four goals from an expected goals (xG) of just 0.9 highlighted how unpredictable matches can be. Yet, it’s Manchester City—if any team can casually score five goals, it’s Pep Guardiola’s squad.

A hallmark of their success has been their ability to control matches effectively. Better execution in managing the game might have prevented Fulham’s late resurgence. Though City is missing key players like Rodri, Ilkay Gundogan, and Kevin De Bruyne, they still appeared poised to dominate this matchup. Instead, they were forced to adapt to Fulham’s pace as the latter sought a historic equalizer.

The tension built as City approached the final minutes without adding a crucial sixth goal, creating a sense among supporters that a significant upset loomed. From the 70th to the 86th minute, City struggled to maintain possession in the final third, with their average possession time dwindling significantly. This was not a typical management of a lead, and Guardiola understandably expressed frustration.

Guardiola remarked, “You ask what happened, and I don’t have an answer… We need to occupy space better.” City’s lesser possession compared to Fulham in those critical final moments raised eyebrows; they completed only 88 passes against Fulham’s 184 during that timeframe, clearly struggling to control the situation.

This isn’t an isolated incident; a similar pattern emerged in a previous match against Leeds. Guardiola acknowledged the need to enrich their gameplay philosophy, commenting, “If people want it, I can do it.” He noted that even during their peak years, matches were often unpredictable, emphasizing the excitement that comes with the Premier League’s inherent unpredictability.

Guardiola’s recent adjustments included bringing in players who are typically more adept at controlling the ball, something that ultimately didn’t materialize as planned. The departures of key talent like Joao Cancelo, De Bruyne, and Gundogan have had a clear impact on the squad’s performance. City’s need for stronger control in games became evident, especially when Nico Gonzalez was sent off, further limiting their ability to impose their style.

Although Guardiola anticipates Rodri’s return, the immediate recovery of their one-man midfield may not be imminent. With the title race heating up, Guardiola understands the long journey still ahead: “The Premier League is very long… You stay there and improve. Teams that win are the ones that evolve.”

Ultimately, as City seeks to redefine its approach, they are at a crossroads. Guardiola’s shifts, such as transitioning to four center-backs for defensive solidity, signal a significant departure from previous strategies.

Fan Take: This news matters to soccer fans as it highlights the dynamic nature of Manchester City’s tactics, showing their adaptability in an ever-evolving league. As teams begin to find new strategies to counteract their style, this could lead to an even more thrilling Premier League season filled with unexpected twists.
